Unveiled on 24 April of that year at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza and built in a limited run of just 501 examples, it featured a lightweight body, the Quadrifoglio emblem and a 1.6-litre twin-cam engine delivering 112 hp. Its lightweight construction and race-ready engineering made it an ideal basis for competition preparation, enabling specialist teams to exploit the Giulia’s outstanding dynamic qualities. It secured important class victories, including one at the 1963 “Tour de France – Auto”, and established the blueprint for Alfa Romeo’s competition-bred sports saloon.

The journey continues with the 1987 75 Turbo Evoluzione, built in 500 examples to obtain Group A homologation and enable Alfa Romeo to compete in the 1987 World Touring Car Championship with both the works team and privateer teams. Its 1,762 cc twin-cam engine featured turbocharging and an intercooler, while the car adopted the sophisticated transaxle layout with a De Dion rear axle. Its extensive aerodynamic bodywork was developed to improve performance on the track while complying with Group A regulations. It carried Alfa Romeo’s sports saloon philosophy into the turbocharged era of touring car racing.

Next comes the 1996 155 V6 TI “ITC”, developed for the International Touring Championship and representing the final evolution of the car with which Nicola Larini had won the DTM in 1993. Among its key innovations was a sophisticated 90° V6, engineered to lower the centre of gravity and deliver 490 hp at almost 12,000 rpm. Introduced halfway through the season, the new engine helped return Alfa Romeo to the forefront of performance in the championship. The 155 V6 TI marked the sports saloon concept’s most extreme expression on the racetrack.

Completing the story is the 2024 Giulia Quadrifoglio Super Sport, a contemporary interpretation of the same tradition. Limited to 275 examples, this special series celebrates Alfa Romeo’s first victory at the 1928 Mille Miglia, achieved by the 6C 1500 Super Sport driven by Giuseppe Campari and Giulio Ramponi. Its unprecedented reinterpretation of the Quadrifoglio logo on a black background is a first in the emblem’s century-long history. Its 2.9-litre V6 delivers 520 hp through a mechanical limited-slip differential. Exclusive details include carbon-fibre components, 19-inch dark-finish alloy wheels, red 3D carbon-fibre interior trim and an individual production number. Today, the same philosophy lives on in a model that combines exceptional performance with everyday usability.

LANCIA AT THE ACI STAND
Elsewhere at the show, the Automobile Club d’Italia (ACI) stand will host two vehicles spanning Lancia’s 120-year history and its achievements in motorsport: the 1907 Alfa Sport, Lancia’s first racing car, and the 1972 Fulvia HF, winner of the Rallye Monte-Carlo with Munari and Mannucci and famously known as “Fulvia-14”.

Together, the four models demonstrate how Alfa Romeo has repeatedly redefined the sports saloon by combining technical innovation, racing expertise and driving pleasure.

Alfa Romeo, at Auto e Moto d’Epoca 2026, Alfa Romeo Classiche celebrates the “berlina sportiva” (sports saloon), a concept that has shaped Alfa Romeo’s identity since the 1950s Four landmark Alfa Romeo models will take centre stage at Auto e Moto d’Epoca 2026, illustrating more than sixty years of evolution in the sports saloon.
