Audi\u00a0is readying a lighter, more upmarket and practical\u00a0Q3\u00a0that will arrive in dealers later this year. The current\u00a0SUV\u00a0is the oldest model in the Audi range, but increased competition within the\u00a0VW\u00a0Group \u2013 with the launch of the\u00a0SEAT Ateca\u00a0and new\u00a0Volkswagen Tiguan\u00a0\u2013 means it will get an overhaul inside and out to keep it on the pace. While we\u2019ve snapped the standard Q3 several times during the past months, this is now the first time we see the sportier SQ3 model rocking the \u2018Ring.<\/span><\/p>

Under the skin, the\u00a0existing Q3\u00a0uses running gear that can be traced back to the\u00a0Mk5 VW Golf, and like so many other models within the VW Group, the new version will switch to the ubiquitous MQB platform \u2013 used on everything from Audi\u2019s\u00a0TT\u00a0sports car to the\u00a0Skoda Kodiaq\u00a0SUV.<\/span><\/p>\n

The new underpinnings present various advantages: less weight, more space and the possibility of plug-in\u00a0hybrid\u00a0technology.<\/span><\/p>\n

The new model will share a similar footprint to the current Q3, but there will be small increases in length and width \u2013 60mm and 50mm respectively \u2013 while the wheelbase is expected to be stretched by up to 50mm, too.<\/span><\/p>\n

Those gains in size will help boost practicality as Audi looks to provide more cabin space for passengers in the rear. Boot capacity is expected to increase from the current car\u2019s 420 litres, too.<\/span><\/p>\n

Audi is expected to follow a similar design approach to that it adopted on the second-generation\u00a0Q5. This means a modest exterior revamp for the\u00a0BMW X1\u00a0rival, with a new grille and sharper LED headlamps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, more radical changes are due inside. The current model\u2019s cluttered dashboard and centre console design will make way for a far slicker and more ergonomic layout, inspired by the larger Q5. Audi\u2019s Virtual Cockpit display will replace the conventional instrument cluster behind the steering wheel, while a dashboard that is designed horizontally rather than vertically will increase the visual width of the cabin.<\/span><\/p>\n

The new MQB chassis also opens up a range of new engine possibilities for the Q3, including the potent \u2013 though not range-topping \u2013 310-hp SQ3 seen here. <\/span><\/p>\n
